So when Frodo lied to Gollum to lure him to Faramir’s men – with the intention of saving his life – Gollum took this as a betrayal from Frodo’s side. As his master, Frodo was responsible for Gollum and that was a mutual understanding. In Gollum’s mind Frodo was actually the first to betray him. Gandalf already had many suspecions about this ‘magic ring’ that Bilbo found since the One Ring was lost for millennia. He found out that Gollum had the one ring in the past, since Bilbo found a magic ring in Gollum’s cave. How did Gandalf know Gollum had the Ring? Bilbo tricked gollum about having the ring. Gollum held the ring for 600 years and only used it to hunt and kill for food. The ring, being an evil object, created with an evil purpuse conferred power on smeagol to match his stature. Gollum was possibly already evil or had a tendency towards evil. The Gospel entered the story when Tolkien revised The Hobbit in 1951 Gollum becomes a fallen Hobbit in need of pity and mercy. The word golem occurs once in the Bible (Psalm 139:16) and is the origin of the Golem in Jewish folklore. Is Gollum related to Golem?Īnother hypothesis is that Tolkien got the name Gollum from the Jewish Golem. ![]() The Ring Cycle was published in 1874 and was among the most popular operatic works in the world by the time Tolkien was writing The Hobbit. The most likely inspiration for Gollum, in my opinion, is the dwarf Alberich from The Ring of the Niblung by Richard Wagner. The Riddle of Gollum: Was Tolkien Inspired by Old Norse Gold, the Jewish Golem, and the Christian Gospel? Tolkien’s sources for Gollum were most likely the same as his sources for ents– his love of word origins (philology), literature (poetry and prose), and life (personal experience). In the film’s climax, Gurgi sacrificed himself by jumping into the cauldron, foiling the Horned King’s plan. ![]()
